Dissolved air flotation (DAF) equipment is widely lauded for its high - efficiency separation of contaminants from wastewater. But exactly how efficient is it?
DAF operates on a simple yet effective principle. Air is dissolved in water under pressure and then released as tiny bubbles when the water enters the flotation tank. These bubbles attach to suspended particles, making them buoyant and causing them to rise to the surface, where they can be easily skimmed off.
Several factors contribute to its remarkable efficiency. Firstly, the size of the bubbles is crucial. DAF generates extremely small bubbles, with diameters typically in the range of 20 - 100 micrometers. This large surface area allows for more effective attachment to particles. Secondly, the chemical conditioning of the wastewater can enhance the flotation process. Adding coagulants and flocculants helps to aggregate fine particles, making them easier to separate.
In practical applications, DAF has demonstrated high removal rates. For suspended solids, removal efficiencies often exceed 90%. For example, in a municipal wastewater treatment plant, DAF can reduce the suspended solids concentration from several hundred milligrams per liter to less than 50 mg/L. When it comes to removing oil and grease, DAF is equally effective, achieving removal rates of up to 95%.
Compared to traditional sedimentation methods, DAF offers significant advantages in terms of efficiency. It can achieve higher separation rates in a shorter time, reducing the required tank volume. Additionally, DAF is more effective in removing light and fine particles that may not settle easily in sedimentation tanks.
