Pressurised DAF Safety Precautions
When operating Pressurised Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) systems, several safety precautions are essential to prevent accidents, protect personnel, and ensure equipment integrity:
-
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Operators must always wear appropriate PPE, including:
Safety goggles to shield eyes from splashes of chemicals used in the flotation process
Gloves to protect hands from corrosive substances
In high-noise areas around the equipment, hearing protection should also be worn.
-
Pressure System Safety
Since DAF involves pressurized water, regularly inspect:
- Pressure vessels, pipes, and valves for signs of wear, corrosion, or leakage
- Ensure pressure gauges are functional and calibrated accurately
Never exceed the maximum rated pressure of the equipment. Before maintenance, release all pressure in the system safely to avoid sudden bursts.
-
Chemical Handling
DAF often uses chemicals like coagulants and flocculants. Store these chemicals:
In designated areas, away from incompatible substances
Follow strict procedures when handling to prevent spills and inhalation
Have proper neutralization agents and spill kits readily available and follow emergency response protocols.
-
Electrical and Mechanical Hazards
Keep electrical panels and wiring dry to prevent short-circuits and electrical shocks.
Regularly check:
Motors and pumps for proper lubrication and alignment
Install guards around rotating components
Lockout-tagout procedures should be followed during maintenance to isolate equipment from energy sources.
-
Emergency Preparedness
Have clear emergency exit routes and ensure they are unobstructed.
Install fire extinguishers suitable for potential hazards near the DAF system.
Train all operators in:
Emergency shutdown procedures
First-aid treatment for chemical exposure or injuries
Evacuation protocols
